Invaliden Park, Berlin

with Atelier Phusis, Frank Neau, Dusapin & Leclerq Architectes, 1992-1997

This old military park of 3 hectares located in Berlin Mitte was redesigned as one the first new public open space between East and West Berlin. It is comprised of two parts: a mineral part with a large basin and civic plaza to the South, and a forested part with a lawn, old oaks and play area to the North. At the heart of the basin, a large granite wall seems to be sinking, it reminds us that for decades the site hosted the barracks of the Vopos guarding the Check point at Invalidenstrasse and the Berlin Wall which ran just beyond this location along the Spandauer Kanal. The project was exhibited at the MoMA in New York for the Groundswell exhibition held in the spring of 2005. Its history is the subject of a book entitled: “Zeitgeist Berlin Invaliden Park” published by GTA Verlag, Zurich in 2007.
