Lycée Gustave Eiffel, Rueil Malmaison

with Hubert & Roy Architects, 1995-1999

In 1995, the town of Rueil-Malmaison, near the Château of Malmaison, launched a competition for the renovation of its high school. The competition team Atelier Girot and the architects Hubert & Roy proposed a design that handled the large elevation difference between street and school-yard level to the students’ advantage. The landscaped slopes become sitting areas among exotic trees and an extensive hedge of hibiscus. The street level entrance courtyard offers a semi private piazza. Standing benches separate the students from the street and provide a leaning structure. Vertical gardens flank the classrooms with wisteria creating a green facade. This project is published in a monography “Small Urban Natures”, Quart Publishers, 2004.
