Les Grands Ateliers, Isle d’Abeau Lyon

with Lipsky+Rollet Architectes, BET Engineers, 2000-2002

The garden of the Grands Ateliers is the setting of an experimental workshop for students of architecture where 1/1 models and simulations can be assembled for pedagogical testing. The buildings platform wedged into a monastic hillside required significant terracing. The entire topography is held in place by Corten-plates that act both as walls and steps in the garden. A small amphitheatre enables students to meet for events critiques, and outdoor exhibitions. Densely planted slopes of the garden are stabilized with geo-textile drapes that spare water and weeding. The project received from the Region Rhône-Alpes the award for the Best Landscape Architectural Design in 2004.
